I’ve been wanting to make Skittles vodka forever. Rainbow colored vodka that tastes like everyone’s favorite fruity candy? What could be better? But my friends as I figured out last night – Skittles vodka is better in theory than in practice.
Our recipe involved adding 120 Skittles of each color to about 10 fluid oz of vodka and then shaking vigorously for about 1.5 hours (yeah… our Saturday night consisted of shaking plastic water bottles).
The Skittles dissolve well, but as they’re not fat-free all the fat is extracted out and clumps together as white globules floating on top. And it’s all saturated fat which is why it’s solid at room temperature. It’s actually kinda gross… But that will all be filtered out before drinking. That is, if we decide we want to drink it.
Ok, it’s not that bad, but we did do some preliminary tasting (or more specifically, my friend Rob did most of the preliminary tasting). It took him about 4 seconds to go from “It’s good” to “Aaahhh, my mouth is burning!!!” Apparently the vodka taste is still strong – very strong. He claims for certain colors the burning is even amplified.
So our next idea is to try using the Skittles vodka for mixed drinks: cherry Skittles vodka + Coke = cherry Coke???
